Applied Labels Review/Giveaway!

Applied labels :
* scroll to the bottom to see the winner~
First let me apologize for the pictures they were taken on my phone. I am working on making the photos that I share better looking and easier to view. If you have any tips, please share.

So, I want to tell you about these labels. They make waterproof, dishwasher-safe labels, that can be used as specialty baby bottle labels, date labels and clothing labels including iron-on labels. These are great for a number of uses, including daycare, camp, and more. The tag-a-longs and shoe shields are pretty nifty too. Imagine those pricey Gymboree shoes or ballet shoes that you don't want to lose, or don't want to lose just one, so you currently have to write the name inside the shoe or on the bottom, but that makes them harder to resell or consign. With Shoe shields you can put the sticker inside the shoe, place the clear shield sticker over it and peel off when you don't need them. The same with the clothing labels, it is basically 2 stickers stuck to each other with the tag in between like a sandwich. (can you tell its almost lunchtime here?)

When I knew I was going to get to review this product I got to choose a font, the text and an icon to be put on the label. I chose the standard font since I have a baby boy and the pirate ship icon. I only used his first name since it is fairly unusual.  However I could have used first and last name, or initals, etc.  I took several pictures of my usage of it. I have previously used the free+shipping Vistaprint labels for bottle labeling, and I even show Applied Labels as compared to the Vistaprint ones. I will say they peel off much easier when you want them to and they are capable of getting wet without messing up. The Vistaprint ones start peeling apart when they get wet. I have not come across a negative, except I would  not personally purchase the disposable date labels because they are disposable. I would want something reusable, or cheap. I am Loving the name label with icon. and the clothing label is working nicely too. It has not irritated my very sensitive skinned little boy either. He breaks out to anything other than 100% cotton.

These are the bottle tags- 2 different types; the printed name ones, and the blank ones for the date.

This shows my use of the clothing tags, the date tags, and the name stickers. It also came with shoe shields- clear stickers that you place over the name tag to protect it. These date stickers are used as the backers to the name sticker on a clothing tag to make it stick but allows it to come off easy. I used a gel pen to write the date on these date stickers hoping to reuse them, but that is a no-go. It is nice that they peel off easy, but they are not reusable. I am going to try to use some alcohol or nail polish remover to take off the ink to see if that helps.
This is what happened to my  gel ink pen writing- it just smeared.
I tried a regular ink pen- that DID not work, it did not show up on the labels at all! and then went to my trusty sharpie.

This is how the labels from vistaprint look after a couple days.
Now for the fun part!!! You can win $25 to use at Applied Labels!! Go check out their website, or facebook page. Tell me what you would use $25 to buy in the comments here! Winner will be drawn May 7th using Random.org

Curves Free week.

Get a Free week at Curves here.

I used to go to Curves many years ago before I had my kids and when I lived around the corner from one. I now work near one, and it would probably be a good idea for me to check into going during my lunch or before/after work one day. I did enjoy it and it was only 30 min workout. That was several years ago and I hear it has changed quite a bit. My understanding is that they now have classes including Zumba. I have done Zumba with my friend Emily by video upstairs in my house and it was quite a fun workout. And BOY did we sweat.

Totsy

Are you familiar with this? I recently have been introduced to it but it is new to me. I am not familiar with them but assume from the way their website is set up that it is similar to Zulily, though they list they are up to 80% off versus 70% off.

Does anyone have a review of them?

Site spotlight: Zulily

If you have not checked out Zulily then you are Missing out! My mom, sister and I have bought a Ton of cute outfits for the kids from here. There are spotlights and sales posted regularly. I do not get a lot of junkmail or too much email from them. If you have ever seen the super cute outfits my daughter Spencer wears and have wondered where I find them, it is here. Most all of the time, they are on super sale, and she is the only one wearing the outfit.

Preschool Printables

My daughter is so smart! Really she is, I am not just bragging. She repeats things to me and tells me things that stun me sometimes. I mean really, what 3 year old do you know that can tell you about Tsunamis and can tell you about what she heard on the news about an earthquake and Tsunami in Japan and then Hawaii? She loves extreme weather. She currently watches the news and is intent about this crazy weather we are having in the south lately with the tornadoes. We had to get up in the middle of the night about a month ago and hover in our bedroom closet with a tornado going by outside. She remembers that- I am grateful for that night that she crawled into bed with us saving us from having to run to her bedroom across the house to get her. Anyway, I would love to home school but having to work full-time prevents me from doing that. I have stumbled upon several blogs lately with really neat preschool age printables and home school materials. My daughter is what we call a farm princess. More on that in another post!  So when I saw these princess and knight printables I had to download them. She loves reading and doing colors, patterns, and counting. So I see this being a Great help on our drive to the beach this summer and when I am nursing her baby brother. I hope you can find use out of these sites as well. At least I can help prepare her for school and by using the Biblical based lessons on the site I can prepare her faith for a school that does not support our beliefs.

Free Preschool Printables

a Few other fun Preschool packs and printables I saw, and honestly I could probably link to a TON. they all look so interesting and FUN. I could totally see doing many of these programs I hope you can use them as well. Big Thanks to 1plus1plus1equals1 and homeschoolcreations.com

I have become a huge Blog reader. I have found so many blogs that have met different needs in my life, both creatively, and emotionally! I follow one that has great creative craft ideas and recipes, but what I love most is the spirituality I receive from reading it. I am going to paste a post that really hit me this morning reading it. This touches my heart and makes me think deeper about what we just celebrated with Easter celebrations of what Christ did for us in His Death and Resurrection. I hope it opens your heart and mind to think deeper as well today.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Three years ago this week, my 14-year-old son had major open-heart surgery. Twenty-six months ago this week, my husband had major open-heart surgery. And last week, my husband had a second major open-heart surgery.
Three years, three surgeries, three artificial heart valves. Mercy.
There have been times over the past three years when I have felt as if it were all too much. And kind people would say to me, "God will never give you more than you can handle."
Although it's meant to be encouraging, there's just one problem with that statement. It's wrong.
Of course, the intentions of the folks who say those words are right and good. It's the statement itself that is wrong. It's actually a misquotation of a verse in the New Testament, I Corinthians 10:13, which says,
"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it."
So there is a promise that you will not face more temptation than you can bear. But hardship, difficulty, adversity? No. There is no promise that you will not face more hardship than you can bear.
That would be very bad news if it not for one thing: You don't have to bear it. Jesus bears it for you.
One thing I've learned over these past three years is that I am pretty strong. I can handle quite a bit. But the biggest thing I've learned is that I'm not nearly strong enough to handle everything that happens. In fact, when I try to handle things by myself, things just get worse and worse. Then I'll remember the truth, and back to the feet of Jesus I'll go. What really amazes me is that He never runs out of patience with me.
This week is another anniversary, of course. Nearly two thousand years ago this week, the Son of God, who had come to earth to live as a man, offered himself as a sacrifice for us. The story is so familiar--Thursday's betrayal, Friday's crucifixion, Saturday's despair, Sunday's triumph. Every year we sing about it, we wear springy clothing and fill baskets in honor of it. It's a story worth telling and re-telling; the celebration is important.
But sometimes, in the messy details of life, we forget some of the truth behind the story. It can be so easy to feel as though we're having to deal with things all by ourselves. Even if we believe that the death of Jesus is enough to ensure that we can live with God in heaven for eternity, we sometimes forget that Jesus offers us salvation right now. "Eternal life" is not something that starts when we die; it begins now. Life with God is a present reality, not just a hope for the future.
He doesn't promise that we won't be given more than we can handle. He promises that we won't be given more than He can handle.
And that is good news indeed.
couponing at Walmart
Couponing is not for the faint of heart. It can take a lot of planning, searching for the coupons, finding match-ups to sales, pulling the coupons you are going to use, writing out your list, having a back up plan, and figuring out your out of pocket total. Then there is the possibility that your cashier is not aware of the policy and says you can't use something- this can happen for various reasons. You have to be prepared to either explain how the policy works, wait for a manager to come over or walk away without that item and pick it up at another store sometime.
Walmart is typically very coupon friendly, though they do not double. Their "everyday low prices" combined with coupons can give you some very good deals everyday. Other items are better deals at the high-end grocery stores like Harris Teeter and Bi-Lo combined with weekly sales since they double coupons up to $0.99.
I follow several coupons blogs and forums such as We Use Coupons, Money Saving Mom, and Target savers. One of the other blogs I follow- Couponing to Disney, has a great master list of items you can get from Walmart for $1 and under. I thought it would be worth sharing for you to start organizing your own shopping list, so that even if you have no desire to be an extreme couponer, if you pick up your normal shopping items and combine them with coupons, you will save money. I also like that she has it set up like a shopping list. Click your items and it will print a nice little list for you to take with you to Walmart. Now the real work starts......only picking up what is on your list! :-)
Big News!
I have been asked to contribute to an online newspaper by sharing my various projects and information that people currently want to know about. It is refreshing to see people interested in being thrifty and crafty again. I  had to look up the meaning of crafty as I have had people ask me why I talk about couponing, savings, and deals on a blog about being crafty. This is what I found.
craft·y
1. skillful in underhand or evil schemes; cunning; deceitful; sly.
2. skillful; ingenious; dexterous.
Well, lets hope no one believes that I am underhanded or deceitful LOL, but I think skillful and cunning may be good descriptions. I find that being crafty is not about making things, its finding ways to stretch and be creative with the resources we have available to us. I find ways to meet needs and wants by frugal means. I just happen to enjoy the creative process of it as well.
I hope to share different ideas to fill your life with things you love in a fun manner while saving money. I have found much more fulfillment this way and spending time with my family. The economy has taught me to slow down, and find different activities and Joy that I now fill my life with.
I started off by sharing my cake plate project, since I figured it was cheap, quick, and could appeal to quite a few people. Would love to hear your feedback and tips, and even what you think would be good topics to cover going forward.
Well I guess I am officially published:
Kindle Review
I love to read. I love the feel of a book in my hand and feeling the turn of the page. I have loved reading since I was a child and still can tell you some of my favorite books from then. I have always been one to want to read a book  if there is a movie for it because the books are So much better. So when several of my friends started getting the Kindle or Nook I just could not see myself using one. I mean, I like the hold of a book! and I figure that if I were going to spend that kind of money on an item that I could just read on, I could save a little more and get a netbook computer, right?
Well my friend Emily got one, and I was at her house during my maternity leave on a playdate. She let me take my time playing with it, and I have to say since I was breastfeeding my son, It was nice to be able to hold the book with one hand and turn pages with just a finger. It allowed me to multi-task better. I also liked that it does have wi-fi built in. Other models are 3G so can be online anytime. So I figured I could also blog, check email, play online- so it was basically a smaller computer. I decided I liked it after all, and used my Christmas cash to get one for myself when they went on sale.
I Still love it. I have only downloaded free books and games so far, but there are kid books, like "Guess How Much I Love You!" which are illustrated. The Classics are always free. I was able to read to my daughter in the car, and on a train. It takes up so little space and can hold several hundred worth of books. Think of the clutter I can cut down on. I don't like that it is harder to loan out to a friend. So my friend Em has the Sookie Stackhouse books, and I can't borrow them from her when she is done reading them. Some books are loanable for 2 weeks, but there are more that are not. I have enjoyed the games and the online play. I can even do Facebook chat on my Wi-Fi version. I downloaded the Bible and have been able to take notes directly in the Kindle from the sermons. There are devotions, thrillers, and short stories. I haven't had any other issues with it. My 4 year old can use it for the games and her books as well.
I like that it saves my place. If I get busy talking on the phone, or a child needs me, or the TV catches my attention or the kitchen timer goes off, I don't have to remember to turn it off or save my place, it does it for me automatically and turns off to save the battery. Speaking of, the screen savers are pretty cool.
Kindle is coming out with the capability to borrow from online libraries soon which I think is a great feature.
My husband is Not a reader, but he has even picked it up to read Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn and is glad I have it. I talked my mom into getting one already. So I guess I give it 5 Stars!
Do you know any other tips for the ebook readers? What pro's and con's have you found?
Okra Pickles
r I Love Okra, fried okra, and pickled okra. And love it in soups too. I love growing it and picking it in the garden. I have pickled it before, but this recipe sounds yummy. If you haven't tried it yourself you should try the pickle recipe below. The link to the blog where it is posted is here: Okra Pickles
Okra Pickles
Okra Pickles
3 lbs. okra, whole and about 3” to 4” long
3 c. water
1 c. white vinegar
1/4 c. pickling salt
2 cloves garlic, minced
Wash okra, and pack the okra into hot pint jars.
Combine the remaining ingredients in a medium pot and bring to a boil. Remove mixture from stove and slowly pour over okra into the jars, leaving about 1/2” head space from the top rim of the jar.
Wipe the rims. Put on the hot seal and ring.
Process in boiling water bath for 5 minutes.
Makes 4 pints.
Coupon clipping service
Using coupon clipper services.
www.couponsthingsbydede.com
I had a good experience overall with this clipper service. The website was easy to navigate. I like that it listed how many of each coupon she had. It was very reasonably priced. I received 5 All coupons, 10 $5 off similac, 2 brut, 4 silk and several other already clipped coupons and my total was just under $5 mailed. The Similac coupons alone will save me $50 and are well worth the costs. I received my order in 3 days I believe. It was within the same sale week. I did have one hiccup to the order and was disappointed because I received $3 off similac coupons instead of my $5 off ones. They include your order invoice when it is shipped as they check it off, so I was able to check to make sure I ordered the right items. I then contacted Dede to let them know of the mix-up and my disappointment. I am happy to say they quickly responded and rectified the mix-up. They sent out the correct coupons immediately and credited my account with $2 for future use.
I am not one to do a big stockpile normally unless they are specialty items. So since my son has a dairy allergy and I breastfeed, I am on a dairy free diet. Silk coupons help offset the costs of coconut milk, and the similac coupons help with supplementing him with hypoallergenic formula. The All coupons help with the special All Free and Clear laundry detergent (I used to make my own). So this helps me to spend the costs on direct coupons I need instead of spending $2 for several papers and only get 1 copy of each coupon I need and several that I don't need and use.
She also sells the full inserts if you want to cut out your own coupons. I like just having someone save me that step if I am buying like that. I give it 2 thumbs up! I have used other services before like the coupon clippers. I have had good experiences with them as well. Compare the prices and if they have the coupons you are searching for.
mermaid tail pattern for doll
How cute is this mermaid Tail? There is a pattern for it Here and you can make it for your child's doll! Adorable right? My daughter has her dance recital rehearsal tonight, they are dancing to "Under the Sea" from Disney's "The Little Mermaid" they have 2 other numbers as well, but the lady that made the mermaid tails for the costumes did an AMAZING job! I am going to see if I can get her to do a guest post and show you a picture of them from tonights dress rehearsal. WOW!  Anyway my daughter wants her dolls to have mermaid tails too, so I came across this tutorial, and I like that it can easily come off and be put on most any doll because it is elastic waist.
Font Love
Have you ever been scrapbooking, or crafting, or filling out a memory book and wished you had a different font? I paid a lot of money once for a disk of different fonts to use for digital scrap-booking. I have been more frugal lately and learned to look for stuff online and find ideas from other bloggers and crafters.
I recently downloaded a really neat printable from a blog I came across, that I framed and have hanging in our hallway near the kids room. Its fun and bright and makes me smile. I posted a pic of it on the blog. Anyway it made me think- it was easy enough to do, but I bet I could make my own neat quote, pick a font and color scheme, and print out myself. So in doing font searches I found Dafont! :-)
www.dafont.com is a free website with Free downloadable fonts. SO cute. I downloaded about 12 with specific ideas in mind for how to use them.
What fonts are your favorite? What phrase would you print out to frame?
My cake stand project
So I made one of the cake stands talked about here. I stopped by our local thrift store near work and purchased this candle holder.
I also had these dishes on  hand that were a great aunt's wedding china, and I just love the blue color in them.
SO.....I went to use an off white Spray Paint I already had on the glass base.
let it dry and then Glued it onto the plate
using This product that I just picked up at our local Lowe's
Let it dry overnight, and VOILA......
I Love the color and how it turned out. I used it for my daughter's birthday cake. So far it has held up really well.
How cute it that? I just absolutely LOVE IT!
