{Baby gate for steps}

My son is active- I mean VERY ACTIVE. He is my second child and first boy. I am not kidding when I say he is so opposite of my daughter. We never had to block off these steps from her. We just arranged furniture in the living room to block even getting to this area and she never bothered. He climbs over the furniture and would be halfway up the steps before I could get to him. He makes me a nervous wreck. I kept looking for special gates to block it off and couldn't find anything to work the way we needed. It was a WIDE opening and one side had nothing for the tension gates to work on.

First I tried to get Y-spindles to screw into the side of a kidco gate and it didn't work. SO I returned them. That was all I could figure from any of my searches.

Well go figure a trip to Walmart for something else I noticed a gate that extended the length we needed and could be screwed in, and it was retractable instead of opening by pushing or pulling. So, we tried again and saved the receipt just in case. BUT

IT WORKED! It is simple to use, my 5 year old can do it to get up and down the steps. Pardon the stuff sitting on the other side. I  now also use that area to put things he can't have out of his reach. This is such a relief to have done. He can't get up the steps and my living room is back to a normal set up instead of an obstacle course.

It attaches by being screwed in to the dowel and wall with these eye hooks and thread the metal hooks attached to the gate through them. Done. So if you have stair gate issues- check out the basic wood one at Walmart.

{Entryway updates and organization}

This is the biggest change! I Love it. I needed this area to be more functional with 3 kids. My plan was to have something that we could sit on to put on shoes, and it still store shoes, and other things in cubbies. I also want to have a shelf up high and hooks to hang bookbags. It is a start to my vision but it is taking shape.

I had to share this because saturating it with color just makes it look SO FUN!

This is what it really looks like. And yes it usually does have a sippy cup on it. I got the green bin from the Dollar Tree, and pink one we had on hand. The 3 matching baskets are from Target.

I had to keep this LOVE printable that I have had since Valentine's day. And the small green basket and chicken wire basket are from WORLD MARKET- one of my favorite places for decor. A small pic of my 2 oldest. And a metal welded piece of art my hubby made.

This area is literally at my back door. We needed a place to hang keys, put down mail we needed to keep, and lay things down. This used to be a sofa table. The drawers hold some of the tools we use most often. I used an under the bed storage tote to hold reusable shopping bags, diaper bag, and some of hubby's work shoes that don't fit in the cubby bin.

Above this board for the keys and pics of the kids is another couple hooks and place to hold a flashlight and umbrella to grab heading out the door.

Literally a foot from this table is this side of my laundry room- not as organized lol, I want to have a shelf or counter built to put above the washer/dryer to make this look better. It's the sink that catches most of the junk......

My curtain covering the hanging stuff to dry still works well. Hubby also uses it to hold his belt lol.

Across from the little cubby system on a small wall is another quick organizing area. We just placed this Pepsi tray above it- I am more of a COKE GIRL. In fact Coke is my favorite drink- yumm out of a fountain or glass bottle. But you see more keys, Sheriff's card- we have a lot of people mess with our farm animals and call them alot. Babysitters number and 1st haircut for my 5 year old LOL.

I have this shelf that my son is sitting on that we plan to hang where the stars currently are.

A few other pieces of decor I picked up at an antique shop- LOVE these knobs but need to find some back plates for them to work as we need them. And this sweet lantern for candles.

{New Pendant lights}

This has been quite a process and I want to explain it well, but I Love seeing the blogs and pinterest ideas using new pendant lights. My husband is very proud of what we ended up doing and has been asking if I posted about this yet. So please make sure to comment on here if you like it or you will Crush him LOL. He is very proud of himself. ok- so we are clear- please comment on your thoughts to this lighting update.....mmmk. K.

 I love the Mason jar ideas, but when I tried a Mason jar here it didn't fit the threading. So I just took down one of the white shades to try out a couple ideas and see what I liked.

This is just putting in one of the round bulbs that go above our bathroom vanities. I like it ok.

It's not horrible, but I do like it better than the white shade.

It is less destracting than the white shade especially with our pot rack right behind it.
So I left it up for a while to see how I felt about it and til hubby got home to get his feedback. This confused the heck outta my kids. My 5 year old kept asking about it- she thinks I am a bit nuts sometimes.

Well hubby got home and had an idea. When I told him my dream look for this-

You see this little white ring. It's ceramic and it is the threading that holds the shade in place. Hubby said well let's take a mason jar lid- the flat part and trace the small part onto it and cut it out. We used regular kitchen shears

This is the flat lid of the mason jar- the part that usually seals, with the cut out area to fit around the white ceramic threading.

He just cut around it. Now watch out it is a bit prickly and can scratch or cut you.

Then we put the ring around the flat lid held it up and screwed the ceramic ring in and it held.

This is a closer view of it in place. I tried to use an edison bulb but they were too wide to fit in the jars. But the basic CFL looks fine.

Then I used 2 blue Mason jars and screwed them onto the lid- Now doesn't that look pretty cool.

With the light on! I am in LOVE

In a dark house- doesn't it just glow! This makes me so happy. I leave these lights on at night and it casts such a nice cozy glow about it and reminds me of something from my child hood that I just can't place.

Then I noticed the white lid and said to hubby- I am going to spray it silver so it will blend better and he reminded me we had silver ones lol. Guess I just look for a reason to spray paint things.

So we switched it out for the silver one! Now it looks better and like it was meant to be there. It looks good with the living room mantel in the background.

See even with the pot rack behind it, it works better than the old lights.  It is so sweet and fun. We have had these up for about a month and a half now and we still love them. What do you think?
